Currently showing at The Labia in Cape Town and making it’s way to The Bioscope Independent Theatre in Johannesburg, High Fantasy tells a story unlike any other.
A group of young friends on a camping trip, deep in the South African countryside wake up to discover they’ve all swapped bodies. Stranded in the wilderness, they’ll have to navigate a personal-political labyrinth if their friendship and their lives are ever to be the same again.
The movie has been hailed by The Verge as “smart, vibrant film-making” and by Shadow & Act as a “piercing examination of race, class and gender”within the Fees Must Fall generation. Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2017, where it was described as “Ingenious” by NOW Magazine, High Fantasy went on to screen at the Berlin International Film Festival, and many other prestigious showcases. At the 2018 Durban Film Festival, High Fantasy was awarded Best South African Feature, as well as the Award for Artistic Bravery. Now, South African audiences can look forward to a unique body-swap comedy that interrogates ‘Rainbow Nation’ identity politics in the era of the selfie.
